Papua New Guinea Namugo
Washed Indonesian coffee from smallholder farmers. Mellow acidity, creamy, syrupy body, and herbaceous character with melon, pear, and cola notes.
From the mountainous rainforest region of Namugo (the local name in the Okapa dialect) in PNG's Eastern Highlands, this coffee is grown by several hundred smallholder farmers who cultivate coffee alongside subsistence crops in small 1-2 hectare plots called "gardens". This washed coffee showcases the unique, crowd-pleasing characteristics that make Papua New Guinea coffees so special—mild acidity, heavy body, and distinctive herbaceous notes.
Less than 3% of Papua New Guinea is used for commercial agriculture, with over 63% remaining natural forest, creating pristine growing conditions for specialty coffee. The majority of PNG coffee comes from smallholder farmers rather than large estates, and the coffee is processed at central washing stations where cherries are picked ripe, depulped same-day, fermented for 24-48 hours, washed clean of mucilage, and dried on raised beds or tarpaulins over 10-14 days.
This earthy, herbaceous coffee delivers balanced, mellow acidity reminiscent of cola, honeydew melon, and pear. The creamy, syrupy body holds up exceptionally well in milk, while also offering enough complexity to enjoy black. The herbaceous character combined with fruit-forward sweetness creates a distinctive cup profile that stands out among Pacific coffees. Perfect for those seeking unique Indonesian-Pacific coffee character with heavy body and mellow acidity.
