The full story

Sumatra Putra Tani

Wet-hulled Indonesian coffee from smallholder farmers. Mellow acidity, creamy body, and herbaceous character with notes of raisin, honey, and oolong tea.

High in the mountains of northern Sumatra, coffee growing is a tradition passed from one generation to the next. In 2022, a younger generation of farmers came together to form the Putra Tani cooperative (KPPTB). Today, the cooperative brings together approximately 708 farmers from nine villages across Bener Meriah and Central Aceh, many tending small, one-hectare farms.

It's a remarkable place to grow coffee. Cool mountain air, fertile volcanic soil, and lush rainforest create ideal conditions for coffee cultivation. Here, among the rugged slopes of the Barisan Mountains, Putra Tani's farmers carefully harvest ripe coffee cherries and bring them to the cooperative's own processing facility. From drying and hulling to sorting and storage, the cooperative oversees each step with a shared commitment to quality.

The coffee itself is a lovely expression of this place. Gentle, mellow acidity brings to mind honeydew melon and raisin, while a delicate herbal character reminds us of oolong tea. A creamy body and lingering honey-like sweetness bring everything together beautifully.
